Windsurfing CFD

Last updated on May 27, 2022

AANTC has developed an efficient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) platform for performance sports engineering, including windsurfing. The windsurfing project focuses on the equipment that will be used for the 2024 Olympics. The specificity of this new windsurfing equipment is that the submerged hydrofoil provides vertical lift and allows the windsurfer and the board to lift above the water surface and hence attain faster speeds. The robust large-scale simulations evaluate both the aerodynamic and hydrodynamic performances of the sail, athlete, and hydrofoil.

The simulations have the capabilities and specifications of:

─ Simulation of sail motion; ─ High-quality dynamically deforming mesh; ─ Two-phase flow simulation for the sail and the hydrofoil; ─ Advanced simulation and post-processing schemes;
