This facility was designed and fabricated at HKUST, and it is used to evaluate prototype acoustic materials. Test samples are sandwiched tightly between two paralleled Plexi glass plates (2.4 m x 1.2 m x 0.02 m), which provide a two-dimensional (2D) waveguide environment below 5700 Hz. Foam wedges are applied along the sides of the test region to ensure an anechoic environment. The incident sound field is generated by an array of twenty Pui Audio AS04008COR loud speakers, and it is measured by a G.R.A.S type 46BE microphone. Another G.R.A.S microphone is used to measure the transmitted/refracted sound field. The microphones are mounted onto a Parker Hannifin 2D traverse system which allows the entire incident and transmitted/refracted sound field to be studied.
